Are you one of those people who listen to whale sounds to fall asleep? I've tried it and can recommend. It does work.
However, there might come a day when the only whale sounds we hear are those already recorded - collisions with ships are drastically reducing already-endangered whale numbers in our seas.
This brings me to Whale Safe, my thing for today.
Whale Safe, the creation of scientists at UC Santa Barbara, is an AI-powered monitoring system that creates virtual whale lanes to enable safe passage for cetaceans and prevent ship strikes in near real time. The tool also tracks ships to see if they comply with slow-speed zones and publishes public report cards tracking compliance, naming and shaming ships that fail to comply.Â
It does make for interesting reading if nothing else.
