Often, the best comics or art on the internet is stuff that's simple and relatable, right? And you know what's always, always relatable? Cussing the fuck out of life's daily frustrations. This, for me, is where Effin' Birds comes in. The comic (if you can call it that) started as a Twitter account and has been around for about five years. What is it? It's just beautiful woodcuts and botanical illustrations of birds combined with profanity-laden captions.
It shouldn't be funny, but obviously it is. More importantly (for me), an Effin' Birds post seems to show up on my timeline or Instagram feed exactly when I need it, and the effin' author Aaron Reynolds is really fucking good at articulating his frustrations in a very pointed manner.
For example, if you think the Effin' Birds idea is stupid -
He's also really relevant with his posts - what else do you say about Twitter these days other than this -
And some of these really should be on a t-shirt or something -
Oh wait - they already are, obviously. There are Effin' Bird T-shirts and hoodies and water bottles and a book, and even trading cards... whatever you can imagine a sweary bird on, it probably exists. My favourite, however, is the Effin' Birds calendar, and here's why: one of my BFFs bought the 2023 Effin' Birds calendar, and since it's got a tearaway comic page for every day of the year, I regularly get photos of the day's motivational statement. We've decided that Reynolds and his rude birds must be some oracle because the comics are pointedly relevant to the day's events for us... every single time.Â
