👀 Count your words
#350 | How long will this book take?
This year for me has been about getting back into reading regularly. I'm currently averaging 5 books a month, which is not bad for a girl who stopped all literary pursuits after her Master's degree in English.
Sometimes these 5 books are a 10-page children's picture book (it totally counts) and sometimes they're doorstoppers that feel like the worst sort of homework.
I'm currently in the midst of reading a 900-page monstrosity, more out of spite than anything else, and while trying to conquer this raging beast, I came across today's Thing.
Reading Length takes your book (bestsellers more likely available) and gives you their approximate word count based on the number of pages. Nothing gives you a rush quite like knowing you've powered through 150,000 words in two days. At the end of the year, I plan to take a count of exactly how many words I've consumed for a little pick-me-up.
This website also tells you how many hours it can take you to read the book based on your reading speed, with a Speed Test available on their website.
According to their calculations, my 900-page albatross needs 16 hours, though personally I feel like I've spent 16 decades on it. I'm around the halfway mark, so 8 more hours to go.
Until then, I'll keep counting my words and blessings for a successful reading year.
