There's a dam in The Netherlands, the Weerdsluis Lock, directly on a migratory path for spawning fish. A worker was stationed at this dam to open the door for the fish, but that wasn't working out because the fish would often get preyed on while waiting for the door to be opened.Β
Stay with me; this is a real thing. It gets even more awesome, I promise.
With me? Great.
So, theΒ Municipality of Utrecht, Waterboard De Stichtse Rijnlanden and Water Authority Amstel, Gooi and Vecht came together and installed a fish doorbell.Β
Really.Β
They have an underwater camera at the lock streaming in real-time that anyone with an internet connection can access and if you see a fish waiting, YOU RING THE DOORBELL.Β
I just checked, and 924 people are on this livestream, peering through murky green water in the hope they'll get to ring a doorbell.
For fish.
For real.Β
People around the world are staying up at all hours to ring doorbells for fish.
The human capacity for kindness never fails to take me by complete surprise.
Almost as much as the human capacity to turn away.
Maybe we need a doorbell for Gaza.
Also, I had a birthday this week. So, if you're reading this, navigate to the bottom of this email, click on "comment," and send me a wish βa kindness experiment, so to speak.Β
Happy Birthday BBee
Also, birthday wishes to you, again. π
