Karina often tells me that I have this annoying habit of assuming what I know is common knowledge. It took a while to admit, but it's true.
I'm surrounded by people who, in their wilful ignorance, choose to stay blind to the issues that ought to keep every single person with privilege up at night. For the longest time, I chose to be silent even as I'd scream inside my head, "There's no room for neutrality in the face of genocide!" and "Being neutral is just a fancy way of siding with the oppressor."
As the world burns and children are senselessly killed every single day, staying silent is no longer an option. I've worked hard to break this cycle. My once carefully cultivated calm, thanks to Karina's advice, is slipping away.
So, what's my response now to all those who approach me with their feeble excuses?
"oh, I don't know enough to form an opinion"
GET EDUCATED.
"both sides are to blame"
GET EDUCATED.
"it does not concern me"
GET EDUCATED.
"I don't care about politics"
GET EDUCATED.
"but what about.."
GET EDUCATED.
This is not an angry rant, though. I am writing today's thing with the hope that even one curious soul reading Just One Thing truly wants to educate themselves about the systematic genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestine. For you, I've curated a list of evidential documentaries, spanning from the historical roots of this catastrophe to the construction of the WALL and the weaponisation of water.Â
In today's day and age, where information is at our fingertips, choosing to get educated is a choice, privilege and a moral imperative. If nothing more, at least we'll end up on the right side of history.
Totally agree!
