In Biblical mythos, languages originated to divide and humble humanity after their hubris led to the tower of Babel. I understand the idea, not knowing what another person is saying is a recipe for disaster, and can lead to (hilarious) monikers like Sahara Desert (Desert Desert) or the dreaded Chai Tea. So yes, multiple languages can definitely be perceived as a punishment.Â
But, getting to learn new languages is fun too. And when you can trace their etymology to a root word common to the language you speak, oof chills.
And today's Thing is on a mission to make this journey even more fun.
Sabi is a free extension for Google Chrome that turns your favourite show into a language game. Essentially, Duolingo if it was married to Schitt's Creek (or, *insert show of choice*).
It works with most OTT platforms and I recently started using it to learn Spanish while watching clips of Fleabag on YouTube. And while it didn't help make the ending any less devastating, it did make me feel more enthusiastic about getting into Spanish.
So might as well add a fun language game while you're binge watching your comfort shows for the 100th time.Â
