TIL... what an acronym is.
Do I feel embarrassed to admit this as the holder of a postgraduate degree in English and as someone whose job depends on a fundamental understanding of its minutiae?
Well, yes.
But will I channel this shame into a Just One Thing in the hope that it will entertain you just enough to make me feel a little bit better?
Also, yes.
I'm not sure what I thought the word "acronym" meant. I knew it had something to do with words and the letters they begin with (Yikes! Apologies to my English teachers, especially the ones who wrote "she's a pleasure to have in class" in my report cards). But I'm not certain that I knew that an acronym can only be an acronym if those letters can be used to craft a sentence that explains what the original word is all about.
Anyway, now that I know, I'm ready to have fun with it.

(Typing the previous sentence was followed by what felt like several gut-wrenching, heartbreaking and humiliating hours where I tried to devise acronyms for various words and failed. Totally. Completely. Miserably)

To redeem myself, I present to you the Acromyny, a website that lists words and their acronyms. You can look up any word you like, and someone out there (much, much, much smarter than me for sure) might have come up with an acronym for it. If they haven't, you can create one and upload it to the site.
Here are some random words I searched for:
CRUCIAL: characterization regarding units considered imperative at large
FART: faecal aroma rectally transmitted
CAT: curiously agile tetrapod
Now it's your turn!ย

P.S. Share this with someone who doesn't know what an acronym is. They need this.ย
I have been schooled. Also, this reminded me of the cringe acrostic poems we made with our names in our teens.
