#216 | Don't let rules interfere with communication
Hey there,
I have a confession to make. I love accents. I love listening to the various ways people talk and the varied quirks their accents bring to the words they say.
And among all the accents I love, I love Nigerian English the most. Except it's not really English they speak. Nigeria has more than 200 spoken languages, and so, like a lot of other African countries, they've evolved a pidgin variant of English which combines words and phrases from the various local languages and dialects to create a language that is absolutely unique.
Not just in Nigeria, pidgin is the most spoken language in all of West Africa. And while pidgin may not have a formal dictionary, the fact that more than 75 million people in Nigeria alone speak it brings me to today's Just One Thing.
The BBC's Pidgin news service, world news published entirely in pidgin, which makes for amazing reading.
What do you think? You fit try am? I think you should. Not only will you learn a new language while staying abreast of what's happening in the world, but if and when you travel to Nigeria or Ghana, you could even pass off for a local.
Baaa.
