Hello,
A friend of mine is a closet connoisseur of the finest delights the world has to offer. She sips on artisanal soy lattes, loves expensive cheese, reads Nietzsche.Β
And then I caught her binge-watching the entire Twilight Saga for the millionth time. Yep, I have a propah intellectual friend who is a Twihard.
She knows every line from the movies! She even has her own patented "sparkle" dance that she busts out whenever she is alone. Not gonna lie, that dance is quite fabulous!
Oh come on, we all have a soft spot for all things "lowbrow." Gossip Girl is everyone's guilty pleasure. I'm a walking guide to Greyβs Anatomy. My girlfriends and I are obsessed with romcoms.
Which brings me to my thing for today - a wild and hilarious podcast my friend suggested I check out - Sentimental Garbage. And it's all about that most-maligned genre of them all - chick-lit. Something us propah intellectuals secretly adore, but would never admit to.Β
What I love about this podcast is it isnβt trying to convince you lowbrow is high art. It joyously celebrates loving the pedestrian, who cares how cliched or cheesy it may be. To me this podcast is akin to a hilarious chat with your BFF about your guilty pleasures. No room for embarrassment or shame! Host, Caroline O'Donoghue and her guests champion chick-lit with such pride that you can't help but wonder why you ever smeared your own views.Β
My favourite segment is "Sentimental in the City" where Caroline and partner-in-crime, Dolly Alderton, dissect every single millisecond of Sex and the City. Isn't it wonderful when the Internet points you to people who cherish the same ridiculous things as you do?
If you wish to embrace the cliches, Sentimental Garbage can be your hilarious tour guide through the realm of guilty pleasures!
Nikita
Itβs getting better and better :)
