Hey there,
Welcome to 2024.
The past few years have been a bit of a shitshow, eh? A global pandemic that is still raging, political upheavals, climate chaos, multiple disease outbreaks across the globe, religious conflicts, genocidal wars, and an increasingly brazen disregard for basic human rights. Not really the ideal setting for optimism, is it?
If I have one wish for the year, it would be for more optimism. But I know that is not a wish likely to come to fruition.
Definitely not on the climate front, for sure. Nor when it comes to dismantling the techno-industrial complex.
Don't believe me? Fine. How about believing the numbers?
Look no further than Climate Trace, a new tool launched by Al Gore, which uses satellite data to assign greenhouse gas emissions to their corporate sources. For fans of data viz, this tool has dropped down straight from heaven because you can filter down to extremely granular levels. This tool is also great for fans of holding companies accountable for their emissions. For fans of optimism, though, this is just another (depressing) tool that highlights how much and how fast we're destroying the planet and the climate.
On that happy note, I bid you adieu. Hope you have fun exploring Climate Trace all weekend long.
Baaa.
