Last year I saw The Sopranos for the first time, a piddly 15 years after the series wrapped up. Yeah yeah I know, but better late than never because WHAT.A.SHOW?!! Once I started I immediately understood why it’s touted to have kick-started the Golden Age of television.
I love looking for opinion pieces and Reddit threads discussing shows that I really get into. Somewhere through season 3, I found Sopranos Autopsy that gives you detailed-as-hell analyses of each episode.
If you’ve seen The Sopranos and loved it, this blog is the most detailed analysis of it you’ll ever read. If you haven’t yet seen the show, what a lucky fellow you are. The blog author has STUDIED the show in academic detail. He pinpoints tiny throwaway elements in scenes and connects them to references in art and film. He notices strains of background music and connects them to other episodes revolving around a similar theme. He digs into religion, philosophy, art history, and other subjects in a way that makes me want to learn more about them.
I soon made it a habit to pull up this blog immediately after watching an episode. It was my first watch but it was the author’s 200th (I presume), so my attention was drawn to points and references that I would never have otherwise noticed. After a point I was dissecting each scene as I watched it, trying to autopsy it myself and drawing connections and conclusions willy-nilly.
This blog made me appreciate a TV show like I never had before, and taught me how to watch them in a more conscious and thoughtful way even when I inevitably end up binge-watching them.
