You know I love books, right?
Right.
We once had a vast collection of our own, my partner and I; but gave away most of our books in my never-ending quest for a more minimal life. We now own a few that hold special meaning, and, for everything else, there's Kindle.
But... there's something about turning a physical page, the stories waiting to be discovered, print on a page, well-thumbed tomes... There's no feeling quite like it. It's why I'm increasingly drawn to libraries or if I can't find one, bookshops, the browse-y kind, in a pinch.
It's like this: some people have coffee shops, others have forest trails, but for me? Libraries.
For someone who doesn't have social media, research for my day job sometimes points me to Instagram. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, bang in the middle of whatever evil Insta throws my way; I'll encounter delicious feeds like this one.
Mychal Threets is a supervising librarian at the Fairfield Civic Center Library, California, the same library where at 5, he got his first library card. In 2013, after a couple of other career paths that didn't sit right, he marched up to the front desk to ask how he could become a librarian. Mychal's Instagram, which apparently mirrors the TikTok he started during Covid, is all about librarians and libraries, mental health and “silly, unhinged stories of truth" from the children he meets at the library.
His favourite book is “Where The Wild Things Are”. Mine too, Mychal, mine too.
