Hey you,
For most of my adult life, I've wanted to create safe spaces for young people in-person and online. My in-person efforts have been to nought, something I plan to remedy now that I live in a city village with wide open spaces.Â
A little over a year ago, Just One Thing came to life, brought about by Niki's fever dream to be a writer and my belief that if we want to change the world, we've got to give our children curated access to safe spaces on the Internet. The Internet conceals many an enchanting treasure, but would you let your teenager loose in the scary vastness of it all?Â
As a parent, a daily email with one nugget of Internet joy seemed like an equitable solution.Â
And that's what we've set out to do with Just One Thing. Each day a different curator opens a portal into wondrous realms that might have otherwise remained obscure.Â
But Just One Thing isn't merely for young people; children of all ages are welcome to our daily box of chocolates. The past 299 editions have taught old me so much – like Analina's fabulous supercook that has become my defacto waste eliminator, Dolly's one thread to bind them all, Niki's sexy lamp test, Pai wondering what sepsis and Sonam Kapoor have in common, Proiti's earth speaker and feathered hope, Ria who travels as light as she treads. Most of all, I've learnt so much from our resident teen (and reluctant mascot) about the language of the modern world, which they insist I do not speak at all. 🙄
In the lead-up to our anniversary edition [#365 | ETA November 21], we invited friends to share their favourite Internet places with our readers —so more voices to portal you to places beyond the every day, starting tomorrow and every Wednesday from here on out.
If you'd like to be a chocolate in this ever-growing assortment, this link will tell you everything you need to know about writing for Just One Thing.
Muchest love,
